So far the only thing the banana trees have produced is banana tree pups. Still trying to find out when these things are supposed bloom in this area.
I feel guilty if I am on the computer not looking for a job these days.
I get nervous about this time of year when the first real fronts start rolling in and the greenhouse is not up yet. It really is an overwintering house that will be the subject of future blogs.
The most active part of the gardening season is winding down, at least the part where you have to do most of the labor. There are still things to do, collect leaves, prep beds for spring, maintenance tools and hardscape projects.
The fall weeds are doing well. You just have to respect (at least I do) those plants that grow and thrive with no help. The clover is taking over a shady spot in the front yard, and I am about to let it. It actually has a very nice flower (you just need maximum magnification to see it). The roadside asters always do well. Those things have a very robust tap root. I had wanted to do a bit more of some of the fall wildflowers around here, but procrastinating got the better of me. One of these days I’m going to do something about that. lol
The pomegranate tree had 13 large red fruits. Most of which is on the south side of the tree and making it list in that direction. In fact, I got face-whipped by a branch that I cut two off of. (Note to self: stand to the side when cutting fruit off of branch). The fruits are averaging over 1 pound apiece (the largest is 1 lb 7 oz).
Someone get these dark m&m’s away from me!
The butterfly bush is so aptly named. I would like to plant a dozen more. Butterflies, bees and the occasional hummer hang out at mine. The picture of the praying mantis is not very good, but it is interesting. The unfortunate victim in this case was a small gecko. Then there are the assassin bugs. Have a lot of those around here, they are among my favorite beneficial bug because it is one bad @ss and looks like one too. I have seen these take down bees and those large yellow garden spiders we get around here.
The desert rose is starting to bloom for the first time. Hope to have pictures soon.
Then there is the praying mantis that was having dinner with the gecko. The picture is not real good but it captures the action.
Oh yeah, there are more peppers than I can eat now - if it’s not one thing it’s another. At least this is a better problem to have. The rat population has been reduced - for now.

Gardening is my current hobby, so most of what is here will be along that line. There is a chance of off-subject rambling occasionally. |
